Fujifilm Instax MINI 11 vs SQUARE SQ6

Fujifilm continues to leave a good impression on those who love to take pictures through its line of Instax cameras filled with a lot of amazing features. Two of the Instax camera models from the brand that continue to wow the public are the Fujifilm Instax 11 and SQ6. Let’s get to know about these two popular Instax cameras from Fujifilm and what makes the two of them similar and different through this article.

Overall Design and Dimensions

One major distinction that you will notice between Fujifilm Instax 11 and Fujifilm Instax SQ6 is the dimension. The two also differ in weight in the sense that Fujifilm SQ6 is slightly lighter than Instax 11. Here are their dimensions and weight:

  • Fujifilm Instax 11: 2.6 x 4.2 x 4.8 inches, weighs 10.4 ounces
  • Fujifilm Instax SQ6: 6.1 x 6.1 x 4.1 inches, weighs 8 ounces

In terms of the design, Fujifilm Instax 11 is pretty basic. It has a slim structure with a narrow front grip. You will also notice a ridged thumb grip at the rear, which promotes ease in using it even with just one hand. It is not still pocket-sized, though. This Instax camera also boasts of its rounded and almost bubble-like look. It has rounded surfaces, too. As for its material, you will notice that it is constructed from matte plastic.

Fujifilm’s Instax SQ6, on the other hand, has a somewhat rounded-off square shape or design. The body is quite bulky, which means that it is not pocket-friendly, but the size is still enough to fit neatly in a small bag. Since it is a bit bulky, you may need its strap so you can conveniently carry it around. It uses a sort of metal in the area surrounding the lens ring.

The body mainly consists of a material that looks like polycarbonate. It has an attractive finish and a rigid and strong build quality that assures users that it will not break down that easily even if it slips from your hand.

Color Options

Both the Fujifilm Instax 11 and SQ6 have an impressive list of color options. This means that you will be able to pick a color, which truly meets your fancy. Here are the colors that you can choose from if you decide to go for Instax 11:

  • Lilac purple
  • Ice white
  • Sky blue
  • Charcoal gray
  • Blush pink

Fujifilm Instax SQ6 also has these nice color options in store for you:

  • Aqua blue
  • Ruby red
  • Blush gold
  • White
  • Graphite gray

Films and Lenses

Fujifilm Instax 11 requires the use of the Instax mini film, which is almost the same size as a credit card. One thing that makes this film better than the one used for SQ6 is the price. It is because this mini film is one of the most reasonably priced instant films you can find at present. It can produce a rectangular image area of 46 x 62 mm.

You can choose from monochrome and color packs plus you have several choices in terms of border patterns and colors. This means that you can go for versions that go beyond the usual white. It also takes only ninety seconds to develop the film once you ejected the paper after capturing the picture.

The SQ6, on the other hand, uses the larger Instax square film – the one you usually see in digital cameras, Lomography cameras, and Instax printers. The somewhat large film used in this camera is one reason why the entire device is also reasonably large. It is bigger in size, so it can accommodate the corresponding film pack.

In terms of the lens, you will notice that the Instax 11 utilizes the 60-mm lens, which has a mini format capable of delivering coverage that is around 34 mm. It is a pretty mild wide angle, making it perfect for general use, as well as portraits, selfies, and landscape and building photography. This lens is also capable of focusing between one-half meter up to infinity.

Meanwhile, the SQ6 features a lens with a 66-mm focal length. This lens is one that you can retract to the camera’s body every time you are no longer using it.

Flash and Exposure

Another thing that you have to be aware of about the Fujifilm Instax 11 is that it always automatically uses the flash whenever you need to take shots. The built-in flash will fire automatically every time you take pictures. It is the reason why you have to know where your hands hold the Instax camera specifically to avoid obstructing the flash.

As far as the built-in flash is concerned, the Instax SQ6 seems to work better than Instax 11. The reason is that the one for SQ6 gives you a button, which you can turn off in case you don’t need it. This is not available for Instax 11, which means the built-in flash stays on all the time.

The built-in flash button of SQ6 also features three colored plastic gels that simply slot on top. You can use them but make sure that you also increase the brightness a bit when doing so.

Both the Fujifilm Instax Mini 11 and Instax SQ6 have an auto-exposure control. The one for Instax Mini 11 chooses the ideal shutter speed based on the environment you are in automatically. It also helps in capturing bright subjects and backgrounds even if you are in dark settings.

The auto-exposure control of Instax SQ6, on the other hand, is capable of calculating the level of brightness of the environment you are in. Just like the one for Mini 11, it can also make adjustments on the speed of the shutter based on your surroundings automatically.

Selfie Mode

If you love taking selfies, then you will be glad to know that both the Instax 11 and SQ6 will allow you to do so. The Mini 11 boasts of its 0.3-m minimum focus distance. This may not do a significantly great job in producing critically sharp pictures but you have an assurance that the images taken using the selfie mode are often in focus.

It makes the Mini 11’s selfie mode ideal for taking close-up shots as it is capable of narrowing the range of focus to around 0.3 to 0.5 m. A wise advice, though, is to try stretching your arms as far as possible to get the best results from using the selfie mode.

The SQ6 also provides a focusing distance of around 30 to 50 cm when you are using its selfie or macro mode. It even comes with a small selfie mirror perfectly positioned in front. The good thing about this selfie mode is that it adjusts the focus automatically, thereby ensuring that you always get to capture your best part.

Conclusion

Fujifilm continues to impress the public with all the features integrated into its Instax cameras. If you are looking for stylish cameras guaranteed to produce great shots, then you can never go wrong by picking either the Instax 11 and SQ6 from Fujifilm.
